Java Swing/Jaxx ability to use css or skins like Flex

I switched from Java applet development to Flex about 3 years ago. At this point my Java knowledge is somewhat outdated.

  1. I see that Jaxx offers a Flex like way to do css; is anyone using it successfully?

  2. Are there other mainstream add-ons that provide the ability to use techniques similar to .css and skinning the way Flex does?

I'm aware that JavaFX is coming, but 2.0 is still beta and I need to jumpstart some research in order to address Java ~ Flex tradeoffs for a new project to my boss.

At this point any links or product names to get me started would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Fred.
